Weekly markets

Markets here are rooted in everyday life. Most run 8:00–13:00 and stalls start packing up from 12:30, so go in the morning. Bring cash.

• Wednesday, Macerata, 8:00–14:00, through the historic centre around Piazza Mazzini and Piazza della Libertà. The bigger of Macerata’s two.
• Thursday, Porto Recanati, Lungomare Lepanto (seafront) from May to September, Corso Matteotti October to May.
• Thursday, Osimo, Piazza Boccolini, historic centre.
• Saturday, Civitanova Marche, Piazza XX Settembre and Corso Dalmazia. One of the biggest in the region, especially for shoes and clothing.
• Saturday, Recanati, historic centre, around Piazza Leopardi.
• Saturday, Macerata, 8:00–14:00, smaller, in Piazza Mazzini.

Tip: lunch at the Vecchia Pescheria, Civitanova

A few minutes from the Saturday market, in Piazza Gramsci, stands the old fish market, a Liberty-style building with dolphins carved into the roofline. The stalls around it serve that morning’s catch fried in paper cones, best eaten standing up with a glass of local white.
