The River

  • Distance: approx. 10–13 km one way (20–26 km return)
  • Time: 2–3 hours return
  • Terrain: flat, paved cycle path along the river
  • Difficulty: easy

Ride downhill from Scala to the Potenza river valley. You pick up the cycle path that follows the Fiume Potenza, flat and quiet the whole way: fields, irrigation channels, and if you are lucky, nesting herons.

Inland, along the north bank (our favourite). The path follows the river upstream for about 10 km through open countryside, ending near the Abbazia di San Firmano, a beautiful Romanesque-Byzantine church near Montelupone. It is peaceful, green, and feels a long way from anything. Turn around when you are ready and ride back the same way.

East, along the south bank to the coast. The path runs about 3 km along the river, then a left turn takes you up between farms to reach the asphalt route. Turn right towards Porto Recanati, where you reach the sea. Stop for a coffee on the lungomare before riding back.
